Janette C. McGrath, MD serves as the Medical Director of the Bon Secours Surgery Center at Virginia Beach and a Chief of Anesthesia for Anesthesia Concepts.

Dr. McGrath received her medical degree from the Georgetown University Medical School in 1992.  She entered a residency in general surgery at Cedars-SinaiMedicalCenter in Los Angeles, California.  After her third year of general surgery residency, she was invited to become the fellow of the 20-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Cedars-Sinai.  As the Surgical Intensive Care Unit Fellow, Dr. McGrath was responsible for setting up a curriculum for the third-year general surgery and anesthesiology residents rotating through the unit. During her time at Cedars-Sinai, along with raising a family, Dr. McGrath served on several committees, published numerous articles and gave many presentations, all of which are outlined in her curriculum vitae.

She then entered a residency in Anesthesiology at Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, which she completed in 1999, where she served as Chief Resident during her last year.  At that time, Dr. McGrath authored a chapter on the Preoperative Evaluation of Surgical Patients in the second edition of Surgical Attending Rounds by Lee and Dyke.  She performed experimental research on rats investigating prostaglandin levels after partial brain extraction.   For the six months after residency, Dr. McGrath worked as an attending anesthesiologist at Allegheny General Hospital while her husband completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

In 1999, Dr. McGrath accepted a position as a staff anesthesiologist with Virginia Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care Specialists (formerly James River Anesthesiology Associates).  This group performs the majority of anesthesiology on the Hampton Roads peninsula in Virginia.  Dr. McGrath was very active in her group as well as within the hospital.  Dr. McGrath was on the board of the James River Anesthesiology component of Virginia Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care Specialists. She served on the Patient Safety and Quality of Patient Care Committees for Riverside Regional Medical Center.   She started the monthly Anesthesiology Morbidity and Mortality meeting at Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she was the Director of Morbidity and Mortality for the Anesthesia Section.  She also performed most of the educational and quality improvement functions of her anesthesiology group.  Prior to leaving Riverside Regional Medical Center, Dr. McGrath moderated and presented a well-received Grand Rounds presentation on “The Preoperative Assessment of the Surgical Patient”.

To strengthen her knowledge of business in the medical field, Dr. McGrath attended the American Society of Anesthesiology Practice Management Conference.  In 2007, Dr. McGrath received certification in Business Administration after completing course work sponsored by the American Society of Anesthesiology.

In 2007, Dr. McGrath joined Anesthesia Concepts as the Medical Director of the Bon Secours Surgery Center at Virginia Beach. She currently practices anesthesia there as the sole anesthesiologist, working closely with nurse anesthetists.  Dr. McGrath’s role as Medical Director has allowed her to use her previous experience on quality improvement committees and her certification in Business Administration.  She instituted, and is Chairman of, the Peer Review Committee which provides oversight to the safety and practice of the entire medical staff and ancillary professions.  She is also Chairman of the Performance Improvement Committee at the Surgery Center as well as Chairman of the Surgery Center’s Medical Executive Committee.  She also serves on the Surgery Center’s Physician Advisory Board.  Her hope is to develop a regional component of Anesthesia Concepts in the Tidewater Virginia area.
